This book is based on more than 10 years’ research into crimes against animals, primarily on wildlife crime. Yet it remains a work in progress and considerably more needs to be done before we fully understand those who ‘willingly’ kill, injure or harm animals and the various reasons why they do so. From the outset it should be made clear that this is not an animal rights book. While inevitably it includes some discussion of animal rights concepts, and debates concerning the legal protection of animals, its focus is illegal activity directed towards animals based on current law and the prohibitions contained therein, rather than on any notion of what the law should be or the case for legal personhood for non-human animals.
