This is the case for the series of International Conferences on Rabies in Asia. The first such conference was co-organized by the Merieux Foundation and WHO in 1989 in Samarkhand, Uzbekistan. It was followed at two to three year intervals by conferences. In Africa a group of independent scientists and public health officers created
SEARG (Southern and Eastern African Rabies Group) in Lusaka, Zambia in 1992. After the very successful 1993 conference organized in South Africa (Petermarizburg and Pretoria) the group organized biennial or triennial conferences with WHO as the major sponsor.
