    The heartworm is a growing concern to both veterinary medicine and for human, having made significant advances in knowledge in recent years.     La dirofilariosis es motivo de creciente interés tanto para la medicina veterinaria como para la humana, habiéndose registrado importantes avances en su conocimiento en los últimos años. La monografía contiene aspectos relativos a la biología y estructura de los parásitos y sus vectores, la inmunidad que desarrollan los hospedadores frente a los vermes y la epidemiología de la enfermedad. Actualiza además cuestiones relacionadas con el diagnóstico, tratamiento y mantenimiento de los parásitos en animales experimentales, así como la participación de los endosimbiontes del género Wolbachia en la biología de Dirofilaria immitis y su posible incidencia en la patología de la dirofilariosis.
