Physiotherapy applied to the horse: a review
H. H. F. BUCHNER* and U. SCHILDBOECK
Equine Veterinary Journal 2006; 38 (6): 574-580
Animal physiotherapy or physical therapy (PT) modalities, e.g.
thermal therapies (cold or heat) are standard veterinary treatments
(von den Driesch and Peters 2003). Physiotherapy, defined as a
therapy using “…physical approaches to promote, maintain and
restore physical, psychological and social well being…” (Anon
2002), has for long been part of surgical or orthopaedic strategies.
However, similar to other veterinary specialities, there is an
increasing interest worldwide to develop animal physiotherapy as
a separate, well defined professional discipline with a profound
scientific foundation and controlled education
